Hammering Home the Point

Mick George Limited has grown to become one of the leading suppliers to the construction industry in the heart of East Anglia and East Midlands.   The company specialises in bulk excavation, earthmoving, skip hire, waste management services and aggregate supply.  It has landfill sites, waste transfer stations and quarries spread across the region.

And it was one of these quarries – Cooks Hole in Thornhaugh – that Pirtek Peterborough MSST Trevor Cross was called to investigate a leaking Rammer 3288 hammer, fitted to a Doosan DX380LC.

The excavator was on hire from Apex Plant, and appeared to have a leaking ‘O’ ring on the hammer manifold.   This had already been replaced by the on-site fitter, but it still leaked.   Cross replaced the ‘O’ ring again, just in case it was faulty, but immediately spotted as the hammer was tested that it was a hose fitting that was at fault.

Braving the elements on a very windswept and frozen site, Cross quickly stripped the covers and replaced the 12″, 1/4″ valve feed hose. The fitting had snapped clean across but was kept in place by the tight fitting of the hose.   Once replaced, the only real problem was the operator had been moved to other duties whilst the excavator was being repaired, and it took nearly an hour before he was tracked down in a very nice, warm site weighbridge. The only consolation was Trevor’s Transit has a particularly effective heater and he had at least thawed out before the next service call.
