Rapid Response and Sustainable Clean-Up: Pirtek’s New Oil Spill Eater Service in Action
When a hydraulic hose fails, the impact can go far beyond equipment downtime, especially when it results in an oil spill in a sensitive environment.
Recently, Pirtek’s National Account UK Business Manager, Ross Burbridge, received an urgent call from a national account customer near Sheffield. An access platform had suffered a burst hydraulic hose inside a brand-new building with a freshly poured concrete floor, causing a significant oil spill. With the risk of contamination and potential damage to the new surface, the customer needed a fast and effective solution.
Pirtek Sheffield responded immediately. Mobile Service Technician Dave Berry arrived on site within the hour and quickly contained the spill using specialist spill granules and protective booms to prevent it spreading further. Once the area was secured, Dave replaced the failed hydraulic hose, restoring the equipment to service and minimising operational disruption.
However, the job didn’t end there.
The customer also needed the contaminated area professionally cleaned and decontaminated. Pirtek proposed deploying its innovative OSE II Oil Eater solution, a biodegradable product designed to break down oil contamination directly at the source.
The following day, Pirtek’s bespoke mobile oil cleaning unit attended site. Equipped with a 1,000-litre water tank, high-pressure cleaning systems, chemical injectors, floor scrubbing equipment and vacuum recovery technology, the specialist vehicle is designed specifically for oil spill remediation.
After establishing a controlled containment zone, the team applied the Oil Eater solution to the affected concrete surface and worked it into the floor using mechanical scrubbers. As the product broke down the oil residue, visible foaming showed the contamination being actively consumed. The area was then vacuumed clean and left to dry.
The customer was extremely pleased with the results and confident the contamination had been successfully removed.
