Under the Hard Hat Day is a national awareness initiative on 17th October created by Pirtek to shine a light on mental health in the UK and Ireland’s hard hat industries – including construction, engineering, manufacturing, marine, waste management and more sectors.
These sectors are often high-pressure and male-dominated, where long hours, physical demands, and job insecurity are common. Mental health struggles are widespread yet rarely spoken about. In fact, Pirtek’s recent survey of 343 workers found that:
- 94% had experienced stress, anxiety or loneliness at work
- Nearly 40% had taken time off because of it
- Over 50% felt uncomfortable speaking up
That silence is costing lives. And it’s why Under the Hard Hat Day exists.
Taking place each October, the day is a call to action for businesses across the sector to open up the conversation around mental health. It’s a reminder that wellbeing should be treated with the same seriousness as physical safety, and that support should be visible, accessible and part of everyday working life.
Backed by charities like Andy’s Man Club, Pieta and PIPS Suicide Prevention Ireland, and supported by advocates including Breakpoint Academy founder Ollie Ollerton, the campaign encourages employers to take proactive steps: from visible resources and peer support networks to leadership-led conversations and mental health first aiders.
To support Under the Hard Hat Day, Pirtek is inviting businesses across the sector to run their own toolbox talks. Short, practical sessions designed to help teams open up, spot early signs of struggle, and build a culture of support.
These talks aren’t mandatory, but they’re a powerful way to show that mental health matters. Whether it’s a 15-minute chat at the start of a shift or a more structured session, it’s about making space for real conversations.
By hosting a toolbox talk, your business can help normalise mental health discussions, encourage peer support, and show your workforce that wellbeing is a shared priority – not just for one day, but every day.
Under the Hard Hat Day isn’t about ticking boxes. It’s about changing culture. It’s about making sure that when someone’s struggling, they don’t have to do it in silence.
Join the movement. Start the conversation. Break the stigma.
